6. Popular Wedding Themes
A great part of planning a wedding is deciding on a specific theme. With themed weddings, you can be as creative as you like, actually having a great time putting something spectacular together. The theme can be just a little bit different from a traditional wedding or it can be something completely out of the ordinary. As you will see from the information below, choosing to have a themed wedding is an excellent option.
6.1 Asian
Asian influence has become very popular over the past several years in home decoration as well as weddings. Dating back to the 17th century when the Asian celebration was first founded. To create an Asian-themed wedding, elaborate costumes can be made or rented from costume shops and vintage stores.
The maid of honour and bridesmaids can carry bouquets consisting of lilies while you can hold a magnificent bouquet made of white orchids, cherry blossoms and miniature roses. As the groom, along with the best man and groomsmen, again, incredible costumes can be rented such as the red dragon brocade.
Keeping with the Asian theme, the reception can consist of either a sit-down or a buffet meal, offering guests typical foods from this culture. For example, Chinese dumplings, rice, steamed buns, sweet and sour dishes and so on can be served. To make the reception even more authentic, guests can be offered chopsticks wrapped in personalised wrappers, comprised with your name as “Mr. and Mrs.” And the date of the wedding.
One note, if the Asian wedding will be held in a Buddhist temple, any type of meat would need to be excluded from the menu since this is forbidden.
6.2 Celtic
This type of wedding is another that has become increasingly popular over the years. With this theme wedding, you would probably wear a traditional peasant dress, adorning your hair with fresh flowers. As the groom, you would wear the Scottish kilt, as would the rest of the men. The music for the wedding ceremony would be played by a bagpipe rather than an organ or other type of instrument.
Celtic receptions create a festive time for guests in that professionals can be hired to dance with the guests and even teach them some traditional steps. Guests of all ages will have an incredible time because this type of wedding is beautiful and offers them something different. While you will want to choose many authentic type foods, the one food item that should not be overlooked is shortbread!
6.3 Renaissance
If you prefer a wedding where all of the guests can get involved, then a renaissance wedding would be the ideal choice. In this situation, every guest would be required to dress up in costumes from the 16th century. The bridal party would wear simplistic peasant dresses, carry fresh flowers and wear dainty flowers in their hair. As the bride, you would wear a long, velvet gown, ordained in satin and beads, also adorned with flowers.
The important thing when having a renaissance wedding is to provide information to the guests on the invitations, encouraging their participation. After all, without their co-operation, the wedding would be a mix of 16th century and modern. A renaissance wedding can be performed in a cathedral church or even in the countryside. Often, towns will have old farmhouses or historical estates that offer the perfect setting.
6.4 Halloween
Couples married on Halloween agree that this is actually an excellent time to exchange “I Do’s”. At this time of year, you can dress up as anyone or anything you like. That means you can look spooky, romantic, dress as a rich aristocrat, a famous person, animal, whatever you like.
To prepare guests and get them into the occasion, black invitations with white lettering and spider webs in the corner can be sent. Typically, churches are not comfortable with this type of theme wedding but you can find a number of other locations that would work perfectly. For example, an old barn could be used, set up with hay bales for the guests to sit on, decorate with a coffin, spider webs, glowing candles and other Halloween items.
As the bride, you could dress up as a witch and as the groom, a mummy. Even the minister can get involved by dressing up as Dracula. For the reception, red punch symbolising blood could be served along with cookies and cakes decorated for the holiday.
Additional food items might include caramel and candy apples, candy corn and other favourite foods. Finally, for entertainment, in addition to a band, a Fortune Teller could look into the guests’ future, everyone could bob for apples and even actors can be hired to make the wedding complete.
6.5 Beach
If you live near the beach, then consider yourself very fortunate in that this type of themed wedding is very romantic and something you could do. Additionally, a beach wedding is easy to organise on your own or you could hire any number of hotels that offer beach-wedding packages. Typically included in the package is the minister, set up for the wedding ceremony, flowers, photography, music and even honeymoon accommodations at the hotel.
Whether living along the western or eastern coastline, there is something very romantic and surreal about standing out over a bluff just before the sun is setting while exchanging wedding vows. The scenery is breathtaking and the atmosphere relaxed.
Although the price will vary depending on how elaborate a ceremony and reception planned, generally, a beach wedding is quite affordable. For many couples, the thought of having a beach wedding is a dream but for you, it is a reality. Having white chairs covered with linen set along a pathway of white or pastel flower petals scattered along the aisle creates a fantasy.
Along the outside of the chairs, Tiki torches could be placed and toward the front, a white arbor might stand, draped with tropical flowers to stand under during the ceremony. Finally, guests could be greeted by having a lei placed around their neck and for the reception, a large bon fire accompanied by a pig roast and luau would complete this eventful day.
The nice thing about theme weddings is that they create a wonderful memory that is unique and extra special. The above recommendations are just that – ideas of what other couples have done but the options are limitless. Other themes that you might consider include:
- Sports.
- Disney.
- ANZAC.
- Sci-Fi.
